Muddy Makes Music: A Story about Newfoundland's Beautiful Ugly Stick - Carl Hutton & Tessa Crosbie
Muddy, the mop, is sad because she thinks she's headed to the trash heap! Then she has an idea, and an Ugly Stick is born! Come along with Muddy and her friends as they work together to turn trash into beautiful music!
Newfoundland storyteller Carl Hutton has created a whimsical story about how a gang of household and workshop cast-offs headed for the trash heap learn to work together, recycle themselves and create something new and wonderful—a Newfoundland Ugly Stick.
With its distinctive percussive sounds of jingling, jangling and thumping, this unique instrument is one anyone can make, and anyone can play. You'll even see an Ugly Stick on stage in the Broadway musical "Come From Away."
Creating an Ugly Stick involves attaching various noise-making objects to a long stick. These objects can include bottle caps, bells, tin cans, bits of metal, buttons, and other rattling items. It is usually adorned with colourful decorations, such as ribbons and paint, making it visually vibrant and eye-catching.
With watercolour illustrations by Newfoundland artist Tessa Crosbie, this story, sure to captivate the little ones, teaches lessons of teamwork, recycling and creativity.
